"Instead of Water": A Refreshing Drink for Hot Weather

Many countries around the world are experiencing record temperatures, which calls for avoiding the sun as much as possible during the day and using sunscreens, as well as maintaining hydration. When thinking about preventing dehydration, the first thing that comes to mind is water, but a doctor claims there is a better option for dealing with the heatwave: milk. Dr. Natasha Fernando, the medical director at Medichecks, says that milk "may be more beneficial than water for maintaining hydration."

She explains that due to the sugar, protein, and fat content in milk, which slows the rate of fluid emptying from the stomach, a glass of milk will help you stay hydrated for longer periods. She adds, "Milk also contains sodium, which allows your body to retain water for a longer time, aiding hydration levels."

It’s not just cow's milk; vegans or those who are lactose intolerant can also benefit from a variety of plant-based alternatives. Dr. Natasha points out that "soy milk also contains electrolytes, which further helps with rehydration."

In addition to milk, she recommends consuming watermelon, cucumber, or cucumber juice, as well as fresh fruit juices diluted with water and coconut water to help stay cool.

It is also known that a hot drink on a hot day might be a better option for cooling down by prompting the body to sweat. Peter McNaughton, a neuroscientist at Cambridge University, stated, "Hot drinks have an effect on your systemic cooling mechanisms in a way that goes beyond their actual effect in heating your body." This might explain the popularity of chili peppers in hot countries, as they induce sweating and activate a full range of temperature-lowering mechanisms.
