North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dismissed the Minister of Public Security and the heads of regional committees on Wednesday due to their responsibility for the significant damage caused by recent floods in the country's northern border areas. The Korean Central News Agency reported that the decision was made during an expanded emergency meeting of the Political Bureau of the ruling Workers' Party, which took place in the border city of Sinuiju in North Pyongan Province on Monday and Tuesday. Kim visited the flood-affected areas of the province on Sunday and oversaw the rescue operation of around 5,000 isolated residents using army helicopters. During the Tuesday meeting, North Korea appointed Bang Doo Sup, the First Deputy Director of the Political Leadership Department of the Workers' Party, as the new Minister of Public Security. The meeting also replaced the secretaries of the regional committees in North Pyongan and Jagang. The Korean Central News Agency reported, "Kim proposed at the Monday meeting strict punishment for those who grossly neglected their responsible duties assigned by the party and the state, thereby causing unacceptable losses."
