Weapons from Iran to Syria: Will the Response be from Deir ez-Zor?

Iran transported two trucks of weapons from Iraq to Syria early Friday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The observatory reported that "the trucks entered Syria accompanied by two vehicles via Al-Bukamal, heading towards Deir ez-Zor in eastern Syria."

On Thursday, Iranian factions in Deir ez-Zor announced a state of maximum readiness within their controlled areas and summoned personnel and group leaders of both Syrian and non-Syrian nationalities from their leave. The factions also evacuated their headquarters in the city of Al-Bukamal in the eastern Deir ez-Zor countryside near the Syrian-Iraqi border and moved vehicles carrying rocket launchers from the city to an unknown destination amid heightened security alert.

These developments come amid expectations that Iran, either directly or through its proxies in the Middle East, may launch attacks on Israel. Israel remains on high alert in preparation for a potential Iranian response following the assassination of Hamas' political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the killing of Hezbollah leader Fouad Shukr in an Israeli airstrike in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as well as the Israeli announcement of the death of Hamas leader Muhammad Deif. Iranian officials have made repeated statements vowing revenge against Israel in response to these operations, coinciding with threats from officials of Iran's proxies in the region.
