Deprivation of Membership of a Moroccan Parliament Deputy

The Constitutional Court in Morocco has decided to strip Abdessamad Khennani, elected from the local electoral district of Khouribga (Khouribga Province), of his membership in the House of Representatives due to the misappropriation of public funds. The Constitutional Court called for partial elections to fill the vacant seat in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 5 of Article 91 of the organic law relating to the House of Representatives.

Khennani is a member of the political bureau of the "Progress and Socialism" Party and also serves as the head of the Boujniba municipality in Khouribga Province. This decision came following a request from voters with interests to the Court’s General Secretariat to strip parliamentarian Abdessamad Khennani of his membership in the House of Representatives after his conviction for the misdemeanor of "severe neglect resulting in the misappropriation of public funds."

The court stated that Khennani "lost his eligibility to vote after the rejection of the appeal, and consequently, he must be stripped of his House membership by law in accordance with the provisions of Article 11 of the applicable organic law."
