3 Deaths in Building Collapse in Egypt

The number of deaths due to the collapse of a five-story building in Shibin al-Kawm, Monufia Governorate, Egypt, has risen to 3 victims whose bodies were retrieved from the rubble as of this morning, Sunday. Among the deceased are a couple and a 90-year-old woman named "Mabrouka M. A," who happened to be passing under the building at the moment of its collapse. Her body has been transferred to the Shibin al-Kawm Teaching Hospital.

Ambulance vehicles rushed to the site immediately after the incident to transport the victims and the injured. The Monufia Governor, Major General Ibrahim Abu Limon, stated that the collapsed building had previously been issued an evacuation and demolition order, but the owner did not comply with the directive.

The governor visited the site of the building collapse to assess the situation and take all necessary measures. The collapsed building had a prior repair order, which the owner neglected to act upon, leading to the issuance of a demolition and evacuation order from the committee for crumbling structures, number 87 for the year 2023. A report was filed at the Shibin al-Kawm Police Station for the complete evacuation and demolition of the building down to ground level while ensuring the safety of passersby and property. The order was handed over to the owner, who refused to comply, and tenants were evacuated.

The governor has tasked a committee with inspecting neighboring homes to assess their structural safety and coordinate with all relevant agencies to take necessary actions to demolish all buildings that have received demolition orders within the governorate to ensure the safety and lives of citizens.
