Electricity of Lebanon: We are Committed to Giving Workers Their Rights

The Board of Directors of Electricity of Lebanon issued a statement today, Saturday, stating: "In reference to the statement from the Union of Workers and Employees of Electricity of Lebanon dated 09-08-2024, concerning the application of Decree No. 13020/2024, the Board of Directors wishes to clarify the following: The Board has always stood by the employees of Electricity of Lebanon by fulfilling their demands and recognizing their rights, the most recent being the issuance of Board Decision No. 283-16/2024 dated 28-06-2024, which approved the benefits from the provisions of the aforementioned decree. It is important to note that this decision was not issued based on the union's demands but as an application of the valid decrees. Therefore, the Board reaffirms its commitment to granting all employees their rights as long as they comply with the provisions of the applicable laws and regulations, and the obligations required from these employees in return.

Based on this, the General Directorate will send a letter requesting the reconsideration of the contents of the Ministry of Finance letter No. 1916/S1 dated 05-08-2024, which contained a rejection of Board Decision No. 283-16/2024, following a call made by the Director General of the Ministry of Finance to the Chairman of the Board - General Director, requesting a reconsideration.

Regarding the request for an apology concerning the statements made by the union, the Board believes that it remains the union's duty to apologize for its latest statement as well as for its previous statements (No. 1 and No. 2), which contained inaccuracies, falsehoods, and allegations against the administration that are contrary to the truth and unrelated to labor demands. The Board affirms that the decisions mentioned in the union's previous statement were made based on the proposals of the concerned departments and their employees after thorough examination and modification to align with the operation of the public service and the continuity of the institution in providing electricity to citizens according to the institution's capabilities in these difficult circumstances, recognizing the responsibility placed upon it.”
