Qatar and Pakistan announced early Monday that promising progress has been made in the negotiations between the United States and Iran in Switzerland. This includes establishing a mechanism for further technical discussions and a roadmap for reaching an agreement within 60 days, addressing nuclear issues, creating a de-escalation cell in Lebanon, and setting a communication line for the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
The first session of high-level talks in Bürgenstock, Switzerland concluded under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. The session was attended by representatives from Iran, the United States, as well as mediators Qatar and Pakistan.
The Lake Lucerne Summit, according to the statement, took place in an optimistic and constructive atmosphere, with encouraging progress marked by the creation of a platform for ongoing technical talks.
Based on the Memorandum of Understanding, parties agreed to form a high-level committee to supervise the political aspect of the mediation process.
Senior negotiators will provide regular reports to this high-level committee and will lead working groups focused on nuclear issues and sanctions, as well as a monitoring and conflict resolution group to ensure effective implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, alongside other topics.
The high-level committee agreed on a roadmap to reach a final agreement within 60 days, facilitating immediate commencement of further technical conversations. A communication line was also established during the period mentioned in the fifth paragraph of the Memorandum of Understanding to prevent incidents and misunderstandings, ensuring the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mediated by the facilitators, the parties also agreed to form a de-escalation cell with the Lebanese Republic to ensure adherence to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding. Technical discussions will continue throughout the week at the Bürgenstock resort on all issues.
The mediation parties will continue to exert maximum efforts to maintain negotiations in a constructive atmosphere, aiming for a final agreement, according to the statement.
Qatar and Pakistan expressed their sincere appreciation to the United States and Iran for their ongoing commitment to diplomacy and peaceful conflict resolution. The mediating parties also commended the continuous support and valuable contributions of allied and friendly nations to the ongoing negotiations.
