Syria Arrests Former Regime Officer for Alleged Human Rights Violations

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Monday the arrest of Brigadier General Abdul Ghafar Al-Hussein, a prominent former officer in the regime's army, following a security operation tracking his movements.

According to the ministry's statement, Al-Hussein commanded the "Brigade 66" and is linked to security and military issues over the past years.

The Syrian Interior highlighted that preliminary findings and ongoing investigations reveal Al-Hussein's involvement in abuses against civilians, including supervising the "Mankat Al-Hashab" checkpoint, where hundreds of residents from the Daraa province were detained.

The statement added that the detained officer participated in documented military operations across several areas and played security roles that involved preparing reports and testimonials, contributing to the arrest and disappearance of numerous citizens.

Al-Hussein's arrest is part of a series of actions announced by Syrian authorities to pursue former officials and officers accused of violations during the conflict years, as investigations continue to uncover more details related to the case.
