The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday the arrest of a suspect involved in arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances in Daraa province, located in the south of the country, during Bashar al-Assad's regime.
According to a statement released today, the internal security forces, in collaboration with the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, apprehended Rafat Anwar Al-Amoudi, one of the most wanted individuals for his work with the pro-regime "People's Committees" militia in Daraa.
The initial investigations indicate Al-Amoudi's involvement in detaining and disappearing several residents of the province, in direct coordination with security agencies. The investigation records revealed that Al-Amoudi operated under the former military security branch chief, Brigadier General Wafiq Naser, and was active under the supervision of Assistant Osama Abu Jaafar.
According to the ministry, evidence showed his close collaboration with the Air Force Intelligence branch led by Colonel Qusay Mihoub. His role was primarily to hand over wanted individuals to security forces and then extort their families financially by negotiating large sums in exchange for false promises of release.
The authorities pointed out that the investigations with the detainee are ongoing to uncover all aspects of the case, preparing to bring him to justice to face legal repercussions.
