Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has stated that Syria has no intention of engaging in military intervention in Lebanon, emphasizing ongoing discussions with the Lebanese government on ways to overcome the crisis.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, he noted that the resolution of the Lebanese crisis is not limited to a security approach, but instead requires a comprehensive solution addressing its multiple dimensions. He warned that any chaos in Lebanon would directly impact Syria.
He stressed Damascus's support for limiting arms and placing peace and war decisions in the hands of the Lebanese state. Expressing concerns over the expansion of war in the region and its potential regional implications, he reiterated Syria's position.
In related news, he mentioned that his country is working towards an agreement on security with Israel, involving several countries, adding: "We hope this agreement will pave the way for a comprehensive peace without compromising Syria's rights in the occupied Golan Heights."
Al-Sharaa stated that Damascus seeks to avoid clashes with Israel and sees no benefit in engaging in any conflict. He pointed out that the success of ongoing security arrangements may open the path for a broader settlement.
On the economic front, he noted that lifting sanctions on Syria will be ineffective unless Syria is removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
Regarding the Kurdish issue, he acknowledged a slow implementation of the agreement but confirmed that the Syrian government is committed to making it successful.
He also revealed that Syria has formed a special committee to manage the file of missing persons in accordance with international standards, with assistance from countries having expertise in this field.
