President Michel Aoun of Lebanon emphasized the significance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts, declaring that true strength lies not in waging war, but in the courage to end it through negotiations. During a meeting with various delegations at the Presidential Palace in Baabda, he clarified misconceptions about the 'framework agreement' with Israel, assuring that it does not legitimize the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. Instead, it aims to enable the Lebanese army to extend its authority over all Lebanese territories.
The President pointed out that the absence of a timeline in the framework stems from its nature as an outline rather than a detailed agreement. This approach allows for ongoing discussions to define practical implementations.
President Aoun highlighted that although the framework is not perfect, it represents the best possible option for achieving Israeli withdrawal. He stressed the importance of giving diplomacy a chance, indicating that previous efforts through military means have failed.
In welcoming a delegation from the Association of University Presidents, led by Dr. Elias Al-Waraq, President Aoun reiterated Lebanon's long-standing commitment to education, underscoring universities as vital assets for the nation’s intellectual and cultural advancement. He also reassured the delegation of Lebanon’s historic role as a beacon of education despite the country’s challenges.
Addressing concerns about potential Syrian military intervention in Lebanon, Aoun referred to recent discussions with the Syrian Foreign Minister to confirm that such rumors were unfounded. Instead, both countries are committed to fostering relations based on mutual respect for sovereignty and cooperation in various sectors.
President Aoun concluded by urging national unity and stressing that, despite political opposition, there are red lines that should not be crossed, such as inciting sedition or mob attempts to overthrow the government.
During his meeting with the Maronite religious delegation, President Aoun expressed gratitude for their continuous support. He reminded them of the ongoing efforts to maintain Lebanon’s sovereignty, encouraging all parties to prioritize national unity.
The President also met with Communications Minister Charbel Haj, discussing progress in the telecommunications sector, including reconstruction efforts in the South to support returning residents and economic recovery.
