Houthi Forces Declare Downing of Saudi Drone and Warn Against Airspace Breach

The armed forces of the Houthi movement, known as Ansar Allah, have announced the downing of a Saudi military reconnaissance drone, specifically a Wing Loong II, which was flying over Al-Bayda Governorate. The Houthis assert that the aircraft was targeted with an 'appropriate weapon'.

The group's military spokesperson, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, declared that Yemeni forces are fully prepared to counter any violations of Yemeni airspace, emphasizing that they will not stand by idly in the face of any assaults threatening the sovereignty of the country.

This announcement follows days of heightened tensions between the two sides, after Saudi forces stated they had targeted the runway of Sana'a International Airport following the landing of an Iranian plane from Mahan Air carrying a delegation of Houthi leaders returning from the funeral ceremonies of the former Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The Houthis had previously warned that any violation of Yemeni airspace would be met with a military response.

The Wing Loong II is a notable Chinese multi-role drone employed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and airstrikes, boasting long flight duration and the capability to carry guided munitions.

This development marks a period of increased military confrontation, as the Saudi-led coalition supporting legitimacy announced military operations against Houthi positions. The Houthis have emphasized their readiness to respond to any attacks on Yemeni territory, raising concerns about the potential escalation of hostilities in the near future.
