Contentious Legislative Session at Nejmeh Square: Key Issues on Agenda

The Lebanese Parliament, led by Speaker Nabih Berri, convened for a legislative session at 11 AM, featuring an agenda with 44 items, including proposed laws and government-submitted projects.

At the session's onset, MP George Adwan requested to postpone the debate on the death penalty reform to a future session in a month’s time.

Adwan remarked in parliament, “Some are trying to link the reform of the death penalty law with the general amnesty law to derail the latter.”

He added, “We, as the Lebanese Forces, firmly support the general amnesty law and welcome any initiatives facilitating its enactment to resolve issues affecting a segment of Lebanese citizens who have suffered political injustice and deserve redress.”

Pre-session Stances

Before the session, MPs expressed their views:

Bou Saab: Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab asserted that no parties intend to obstruct the death penalty abolition or other laws, emphasizing that these should not impede the general amnesty.

Bou Saab criticized the Education Ministry for labeling MPs as disruptors, stating that lawmakers aim to alleviate hardships.

Adwan: Adwan reiterated that the “Strong Republic” bloc supports the general amnesty and urged swift enactment, warning against unnecessary delays.

Nadim Gemayel: MP Nadim Gemayel voiced dissatisfaction with the legislative approach, describing it as chaotic and lacking seriousness.

He commented, “Rushing over 40 laws in 24 hours lacks seriousness, brings disorder, undermines state respect, and citizens’ trust. We will express our views per each law, including the general amnesty.”
