Following three incidents over a span of 24 hours, resulting in the deaths of an Israeli officer and a reservist, the Israeli army has imposed extensive movement restrictions on Palestinians in the West Bank. The Palestinian Prisoners Club reported that "Israeli forces are conducting wide-ranging retaliatory operations in several West Bank areas."
Over 80 Palestinians Arrested
The club stated that "Israeli forces have arrested more than 80 Palestinians, most of them from the village of Tell near Nablus." They noted an increase in violations accompanying the arrests, which include beatings and home demolitions.
The Israeli army has closed dozens of entrances, roads, and routes in areas such as Nablus, Salfit, Qalqilya, Tubas, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jerusalem. This includes towns and villages like Bruqin, Kafr ad-Dik, Jama'in, Qabalan, Burin, Tell, and Beit Furik.
The closures, checkpoints, and inspections have led to severe traffic congestion and widespread disruption of Palestinian movement, especially around Ramallah, Nablus, al-Ram, and Jaba.
The army has also imposed a military cordon on Nablus, deploying additional forces in collaboration with border police within cities, villages, and the Jordan Valley area.
These measures follow a 'Duvdevan' unit operation at a Nablus hospital to arrest Palestinians accused by Israel of participating in one of the incidents.
A military source justified the restrictions as necessary to monitor movement and prevent attacks similar to the recent ones, stating that containing the escalation is a "central objective."
Increased Alert Level
The Israeli army has elevated its alert level in the West Bank division, with Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir deciding to bolster forces and expand operations in Beit Furik and Tubas, targeting participants in the incidents.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government decided to demolish the home of one of the perpetrators and conduct extensive operations in villages deemed "terror hubs." They aim to collect weapons, revoke work permits, enhance military presence and checkpoints, and separate the movement of Palestinians and settlers.
The Israeli government linked its security measures to settlement expansion, accelerating the legalization of existing settlement farms and establishing new ones, reflecting an intent to tie security responses with territorial and settlement control in the West Bank.
In response to heightened security concerns and growing instability, the American embassy in Jerusalem has temporarily restricted personal trips for U.S. government employees and their families to the West Bank.
