Democratic hopeful Abdulrahman Elsayed has retaliated against criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing Trump of attempting to exploit his name and religious beliefs to stir Islamophobia and divert attention from economic and social issues affecting Americans.
In a statement to Sky News, Elsayed reacted to Trump labeling him a "deceptive" figure, saying, "I don't allow myself to get caught up in the Oval Office," directly countering the U.S. President's attack against him.
Trump’s remarks labeling Elsayed as a "nice guy" were also addressed during a CNN interview, where Elsayed responded, "I'm glad he thinks I'm a nice guy... many people think so," before he launched into a critique of Trump's performance and economic policies.
Elsayed argues that Trump is focusing on him personally instead of tackling issues that directly impact Americans, particularly economic justice, healthcare, and support for the working class.
Elsayed emphasized that his political priorities include reducing the influence of money in politics, improving economic conditions for citizens, and implementing a comprehensive healthcare system, noting these issues are urgent needs for many residents of Michigan.
Highlighting the nature of the attacks he faces, Elsayed accused Trump of concentrating on his name and religious background to incite Islamophobia, warning that such rhetoric deepens divisions within American society rather than addressing citizens’ challenges.
Elsayed underscored his commitment to a policy that embraces all Americans regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds, affirming that Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and non-believers alike deserve to feel safe and equal in the United States.
He also pledged that this vision would be reflected in his work within the Democratic Party, vowing to ensure the party remains a safe and inclusive space for everyone, based on a political vision rooted in tolerance, justice, and equality.
