Emergency in 17 U.S. States After Attack on Largest Fuel Pipeline

The White House announced late Sunday a state of emergency in 17 states, in addition to the capital Washington, following a cyberattack on the largest fuel pipeline in the United States. The emergency declaration facilitates the transportation of fuel overland to Washington, D.C., as well as to the following states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama. This pipeline is one of the largest carriers of petroleum products, including gasoline, aviation fuel, and diesel, supplying 45% of the needs of the East Coast of the United States, at a rate of 2.5 million barrels per day. The extent of the attack, its motives, and the identity of those behind it are not immediately clear.
