Cheshire police have charged Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault yesterday, Thursday, leading the Premier League club to suspend the French player. The police added that Mendy (27 years old) is in custody pending further investigations and is scheduled to appear at Chester Magistrates' Court today, Friday. Cheshire police said in a statement, "The charges relate to three individuals over the age of 16 who made complaints against him regarding incidents alleged to have occurred between October 2020 and August 2021." City stated in a statement that they would not provide any further comment as the matter is subject to legal proceedings. Mendy, who has played ten international matches for France and won the 2018 World Cup, joined City from Monaco in 2017 for £52 million ($71.32 million). Mendy has won the English Premier League three times with City, although injuries have limited his appearances, and the left-back underwent knee surgery in the 2018-2019 season.
