Tips for Improving Lung Health After Quitting Smoking

A Russian doctor provided a set of tips and guidelines to help restore lung function effectively after quitting smoking during an interview with "Arguments and Facts," focusing on improving health after cessation.

The doctor encouraged increased physical movement and exercise to aid the lungs, as well as recommending breathing exercises. He advised avoiding the consumption of pills, noting that the process of repairing lung tissue will be slow.

Dr. Vertkin explained that if someone has stopped smoking, especially with existing conditions like diabetes, obesity, or hypertension, it is advisable to undergo a medical examination. He recommends a blood test, evaluation of the cardiovascular system, and consultation with a pulmonologist. He also mentioned that coughing is part of the lung cleansing process and can persist for a long time.

It is worth noting that the primary function of the lungs is the process of respiration, where gas exchange occurs. During respiration, the lungs take in air from outside the body through the mouth or nose and pass oxygen to the bronchi, from there to the alveoli, with the help of the diaphragm, surrounding muscles, and intercostal muscles between the ribs, facilitating effective breathing.
