The US military announced on Thursday that a submarine belonging to the US Navy collided with an "object" while submerged in the Asia-Pacific region, but the incident did not result in serious injuries. A statement from the Navy indicated that the incident occurred on Saturday and that the submarine's nuclear propulsion system was not affected and remains operational. It added, "The submarine is still in a safe and stable condition."
US officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated that the incident took place in international waters in the South China Sea, with fewer than 15 individuals sustaining minor injuries such as bruises. The condition of two of the injured was described as moderate. The officials noted that the submarine is now heading towards Guam under its own power for further inspection. They clarified that the nature of the object the submarine struck is not yet known.
