Kim Jong Un caught the attention of international observers during his speech on the anniversary of the founding of the ruling party in North Korea yesterday, not for his repeated comments but for his new appearance. A video clip broadcast by state media on Monday showed Kim walking on a red carpet in an opulent hall, wearing what appeared to be shiny black sandals over black socks to match his black suit and unfinished-frame glasses. Colin Suirko, a correspondent for the Seoul-based NK television channel, noticed Kim's sandals but mentioned that it was unclear why Kim wore them or if he had worn them before. He added that whatever the reason, Kim seems to be paying more attention to his physical health and seeking comfort, according to Reuters. Suirko stated, "He lost a significant amount of weight in May and was seen in September standing on cushioned mats during long speeches, which had not happened before." He went on to say, "He seems to be more cautious about COVID-19 and possibly preoccupied with ongoing health issues."
