Under the title "Second 'Whistleblower' from Inside Facebook Reveals New Violations," the Arabic website reported that misfortunes do not come singly for Facebook, as a former employee of the social media giant revealed that she provided documents to U.S. authorities detailing serious violations committed by the company, expressing her readiness to testify before Congress.
CNN reported that Sophie Zhang, who previously worked at Facebook as a data scientist, wrote a memo after leaving her position stating that the company did not do enough to combat misinformation on its platform outside the United States. Zhang tweeted on Monday, "If Congress wants me to testify, I will fulfill my civic duty."
In her memo, Zhang confirmed that during her time at the company, she "found multiple blatant attempts by foreign governments to extensively misuse our platform to mislead their citizens." Zhang also tweeted, "I provided detailed documents regarding potential criminal violations to a U.S. law enforcement agency, and the investigation is still ongoing." She did not disclose to CNN which agencies received the information.
This story of the new whistleblower comes just days after Frances Haugen testified before Congress about violations within Facebook. A spokesperson for Facebook told CNN on Monday that the company has invested billions in safety and security. They added, "We have also removed more than 150 networks attempting to manipulate public discourse since 2017, and our track record shows that we tackle platform misuse abroad as strongly as we do in the United States."
