A court in Madrid has sentenced Lucas Hernandez, defender for Bayern Munich and the French national team, to six months in prison for violating a court order after being convicted of violence against his wife in 2017. A court document issued on Wednesday stated that Hernandez's (25 years old) appeal to a criminal court in Madrid against a previous suspended jail sentence for challenging the court ruling was rejected.
The document added that the rejection was due to Hernandez having two prior criminal convictions, both related to the incident that occurred in February 2017. He was ordered to appear in court in Madrid on October 19, and he has ten days to voluntarily enter prison.
The French international was sentenced to 31 days of community service for assaulting his then-girlfriend, now wife, in February 2017 while he was a player for Atletico Madrid. The court issued an order prohibiting him from being within 500 meters of his girlfriend.
Hernandez was arrested in June 2017 after violating the court order when he arrived in Madrid with his wife following their marriage and honeymoon. He made his first appearance with Atletico in 2014 before joining Bayern Munich in 2019 for €80 million.
Hernandez has played 29 matches for the French national team, winning the 2018 World Cup and lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy on Sunday.
