An erroneous email resulted in the suicide of a 21-year-old university student. Marid Volks received an email from Cardiff University stating that she had failed one of her exams, prompting her to take her life by jumping from the Britannia Bridge in Wales. According to the British newspaper "Daily Star," Volks committed suicide after receiving the email indicating her failure in a course, which meant she would not advance to her third year.
The newspaper reported that a university official acknowledged that "there are lessons to be learned from this incident," emphasizing the need to replace the complicated method through which students receive their exam results. Volks's mother indicated that her daughter received an incorrect result for a course she failed, rather than the one essential for her progression to the next year. The mother added, "Marid dedicated herself to her studies and her work at the pharmacy. After receiving the email, she felt that all her dreams and aspirations were over." One eyewitness at the site of Volks's suicide noted that she did not hesitate when she jumped from the bridge, stating that it happened very quickly.
