Amy Pope: First Woman to Lead the International Organization for Migration

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), part of the United Nations, announced the election of American candidate Amy Pope as its Director General during a vote held in Geneva on Monday. The IOM stated via its official Twitter account, "The first woman to lead the International Organization for Migration... Ms. Pope will start her five-year term on October 1, 2023."

The member states of IOM have elected Ms. Amy E. Pope as its next Director General during the 6th Special Session of the IOM Council. Ms. Pope, who previously served as Deputy Director of the IOM and has the support of U.S. President Joe Biden, took a leave of absence to campaign against her predecessor, Portuguese Director General Antonio Vitorino.

"Humbled and honored to be chosen as the next Director General of @UNmigration. I am ready to work with ALL our member states and global partners to unleash the opportunities provided by effective, orderly and humane migration," she tweeted.
