Maldives Threatened with Disappearance from Maps: One Solution to Save It

The Minister of Environment in the Maldives, Aminath Shauna, announced on Wednesday that the Maldives may disappear from maps before the end of this century. Shauna told CNBC, "Climate change is a real phenomenon, and we are the most vulnerable country in the world." She pointed out that "if the world continues to harm the environment at the current pace, the Maldives will vanish from the map by 2100." She added, "Currently, most of the Maldives islands are only one meter above sea level, and extensive flooding occurs there." In mid-April, satellite images and new scientific research revealed a real disaster in the famous tourist islands of the Maldives, where several islands have already submerged. However, the government has taken urgent measures to prevent the catastrophe, putting plans in place to purchase higher land in other countries "as insurance against rising sea levels."
