U.S. special envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, stated on Saturday that his country is keen on ensuring the success of the democratic transition process in Sudan. Feltman's comments came during his visit to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, coinciding with ongoing sit-ins in front of the presidential palace demanding the dissolution of the government.
On Saturday, the American envoy met with Foreign Minister Maryam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi at her office and then held discussions with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, his deputy, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, and Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok. The meetings focused on the current political situation in the country, as well as the efforts of the transitional government to achieve a democratic transition amid popular marches supporting both parties in the partnership.
The discussions also addressed issues related to Sudan's neighboring relationships, along with other regional matters of mutual interest. The U.S. envoy praised the strong support shown by the Sudanese people through recent marches advocating for the transitional and democratic process, highlighting particularly the peaceful manner in which this support was expressed. Feltman reaffirmed his country's commitment to stability and peace in Sudan by ensuring the success of the democratic transition and enhancing the partnership among parties in the transitional government.
He emphasized that the United States engages transparently, sincerely, and clearly with all relevant parties. In this context, he supported the Foreign Minister's call for the activation of all constitutional bodies and urged the swift formation of the transitional legislative council.
