On Saturday, social media users in Egypt shared a video of slaughtered and skinned donkeys in one of the cities in the Minya Governorate, south of Cairo, causing panic over the possibility of this meat entering the markets and being sold to the public. The video showed a police raid on a donkey farm where a number of butchered and skinned donkeys were found in the south district of Malwi, located in Minya Governorate.
A responsible source from the Food Directorate in the governorate stated that the incident may be tied to the perpetrators' desire to slaughter donkeys and skin them for export to one of the countries in East Asia, which uses these skins in the production of sexual enhancers and several other industries. The source added that the accused violated the law prohibiting the slaughter of donkeys outside of the zoo and without veterinary supervision, indicating that they will face imprisonment and fines.
