A recent medical study has shed light on the benefit of "breakthrough infections" for immunity against the COVID-19 variant "Omicron." The study conducted by researchers from the University of Oregon Health and Science found that "breakthrough infections" in individuals vaccinated against COVID-19 lead to "super immunity" against variants of the coronavirus, including "Omicron."
A "breakthrough infection" occurs when a vaccinated person contracts the illness the vaccine aims to prevent. The researchers discovered in their study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, that the antibodies in the blood of individuals with breakthrough infections were fully effective compared to the antibodies produced two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine, according to Sky News.
Commenting on the study, co-author Dr. Marcel Curlin stated, "The results of the study open the door for options to curb the spread of variants." He added, "The study confirms the necessity of getting vaccinated as it is the strongest weapon for protection against COVID-19 and its variants," as reported by UPI News Agency.
