The Polish police announced on Saturday that they found the body of a young Syrian in Poland near the border with Belarus, amid increasing international tension over a migrant crisis that the European Union accuses Minsk of orchestrating. Thousands of migrants from the Middle East are stranded in harsh weather conditions along the border between Belarus and the EU member states of Poland and Lithuania, which refuse to allow the migrants to enter their territories. Some of these migrants have already died, raising concerns about the safety of those remaining in the winter weather. The Polish police tweeted, "Yesterday, the body of a young Syrian was found in the woods near the border." They added that they were unable to determine the cause of death. The Polish border guards reported on Saturday that Belarusian soldiers had cut a section of the temporary border fence that Poland had erected to deter migrants during the night.
