New Viral Disease Spreads in India, Killing Dozens

Authorities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh announced today, Tuesday, the spread of an unknown viral disease that killed dozens in the country last week, suggesting it may be caused by dengue fever transmitted by mosquitoes. Amit Mohan Prasad, the Deputy Secretary of Health in the region, stated, "The cause of the increase in deaths is still under investigation, but the symptoms resemble those of dengue fever. We have already informed the state authorities."

According to the local health department, most patients are experiencing high fever and dry throat, with a recorded decrease in their platelet levels. Other patients have suffered from severe headaches, muscle pain, nausea, and swollen lymph nodes.

Earlier, local officials reported that 70 people, including 12 children, have died from an unknown fever in Uttar Pradesh. Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites and is prevalent in Southeast Asia. According to the World Health Organization, there is no specific treatment for dengue fever, and vaccination against it is only possible for individuals who have had the fever at least once.
