U.S. Defense Department spokesperson John Kirby apologized for statements he made during a press conference earlier on Tuesday. Previously, Kirby stated, "The United States will no longer support NATO's non-combat training mission in Afghanistan after the end of this month." He later tweeted, after reconsidering his statement: "NATO's Resolute Support Mission will not end on May 1... There was no decision to change or reduce air support for Afghan security forces." He added, "As General McKenzie said, our main effort is transitioning to withdrawal." John Kirby concluded his tweet by saying, "These were all my mistakes, and I apologize."
