Russia Launches Cruise Missile from Submarine in the Sea of Japan

The Russian news agency reported on Tuesday that a Russian submarine successfully launched a cruise missile from the Sea of Japan at a target more than a thousand kilometers away in a training area on Russian territory. The agency quoted the Russian fleet in the Pacific region saying that the drills also included covert movements, support from warships, fighter jets, and drones. Japan claims sovereignty over the southern Kuril Islands controlled by Russia in the nearby Sea of Okhotsk, which Tokyo refers to as the Northern Territories in a territorial dispute dating back to World War II.
