The Iraqi security media announced on Thursday morning that the Green Zone in Baghdad was targeted with three Katyusha rockets, one of which fell near the National Security Service headquarters. The security media cell stated in a report quoted by the Iraqi News Agency: "A group outside the law targeted the Green Zone in Baghdad with three Katyusha rockets."
The statement added: "The first rocket fell near the National Security Service headquarters, the second in the celebrations square, while another rocket fell near Sheikh Omar area in a residential neighborhood, resulting in damage to a citizen's vehicle."
Earlier on Thursday morning, sirens sounded from the American embassy in Baghdad, activating the missile defense system to respond to a rocket attack that aimed to target the vicinity of the embassy. An Iraqi security source told Sputnik that "sirens were sounded at the American embassy, but the reason is still unknown."
The American embassy is located in the Green Zone, which is one of the highly fortified areas within the Iraqi capital. The Green Zone houses government buildings and foreign diplomatic missions. However, this area, especially the American embassy, is periodically subjected to Katyusha rocket attacks, which do not usually result in casualties.
