The President of UEFA fiercely criticized the newly announced European Super League, proposed by 12 European clubs as a replacement for the Champions League. UEFA President Alexander Ceferin stated that players participating in the new tournament would be barred from playing in both the European Championship and the World Cup. His "stern" remarks towards those involved in the Super League were part of a series of threats directed at the "separatist" clubs. Ceferin said, "We are currently assessing the situation with our legal team and will take the necessary actions, imposing all possible sanctions on the clubs." He added, "Clubs should participate in competitions based on merit, not guaranteed participation in a closed tournament for a greedy few." He affirmed that "the football world stands united against the controversial proposals we have seen," noting that solidarity and unity are lacking for some who only care about their own pockets, referring to the 12 clubs.
