Ford Motor Company has confirmed that it and Rivian Automotive have canceled plans for a partnership in developing an electric vehicle. A spokesperson told Reuters, "We respect Rivian and have had extensive exploratory discussions with them... however, both sides agreed not to proceed with any type of partnership in vehicle development or platform sharing." Ford owns about 12% of Rivian, a California-based electric vehicle manufacturer that went public on November 10. Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed the split in a report published by Automotive News on Friday. No details about the proposed vehicle were disclosed. A Ford spokesperson had also mentioned to Reuters in October that "Rivian is a strategic investment, and we are still exploring potential collaboration with them." Earlier, Ford had scrapped plans to build a new Lincoln vehicle using Rivian's electric vehicle architecture and software. Ford continues to enhance its development and manufacturing of electric vehicles, aiming for a global production capacity of 600,000 vehicles by late 2023.
