As the weather turns colder and people spend more time indoors, individuals may turn to food to fill their time, which can lead to weight gain, according to the site "Eat This." In addition to reduced outdoor exercise, which can contribute to weight gain, public health expert Paula Dubrich advises avoiding certain types of food.
**Sweet Pastries**
Dubrich says, "While one piece here or there is unlikely to cause weight gain, eating too many of these sweets will show its effects over time."
**Pasta**
Dubrich mentions, "Generally, as we approach the colder months, people tend to crave more comfort foods like mac and cheese." She adds, "With decreased physical activity during the winter months, it’s not surprising that a few extra pounds are expected."
**Cookies and Cakes**
Science professor Elise Harlow explains, "Most types of cookies are made from refined flour and sugar, both of which lead to increased blood sugar levels, subsequently causing a rise in insulin, which is a hormone that stores fat."
**Cream-Based Soups**
Dubrich states, "Soup is a great winter food and usually an excellent way to add more vegetables to your diet; however, it can increase your waist circumference if you keep choosing the kinds made with heavy cream." She recommends, "Try to choose lighter vegetable-based soups to avoid unwanted weight gain."
**Fried Potato Pies**
Fried potato pies are a major contributor to winter weight gain if you end up eating them throughout the month. Dubrich advises, "Try to cut back on these foods and opt for healthier choices like baked potatoes."
