Dr. Taghreed Al-Mahmood, a surgeon and consultant at Al-Zahra Hospital in Dubai, stated that there is a completely new technology for accurately identifying breast cancer tumors. This involves placing a small piece in the cancerous tissue of the breast, which can be considered a radar to accurately locate the tumor upon removal. Al-Mahmood added that the piece, roughly the size of a grain of rice, is implanted under the skin using a small needle, helping to precisely locate the growth of the cancerous tumor. Its deep placement under the skin means that the surgery only removes what is necessary from the site.
This new technology not only proves to be more effective in enabling complete tumor removal but also is straightforward, with its precise results contributing to a reduced need for a second surgery and any accompanying delays that can impact life-saving treatments, such as radiation therapy.
Another advantage of this modern technique is that the surgical incision is more focused and precise, ensuring positive cosmetic outcomes for the patient post-surgery. Al-Mahmood emphasized that this advanced technology represents a significant benefit for cancer patients; any reduction in the time between breast surgery and radiation therapy can make a notable difference in patient recovery and increase treatment success rates.
