The head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, emphasized his commitment to the constitutional document and conducting an inclusive dialogue with all political forces to complete the structures of the transitional authority. During his meeting with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly, Al-Burhan affirmed his determination to ensure the success of the democratic transition in the country, aiming for free and fair elections in July 2023.
Al-Burhan reiterated that the military component does not wish to remain in power and expressed his readiness and openness to lead a dialogue without conditions that would lead to stability and development in the country. He noted his commitment to securing the transitional period, maintaining national security, enforcing the authority of the state, and preventing the country from sliding into chaos and disorder.
He also addressed the matter of political detainees, stating that steps to release them have already begun, and any detainee who is not proven to have committed a criminal offense will be released. Meanwhile, the U.S. official listened to Al-Burhan's political vision regarding the democratic path and achieving free and fair elections. She highlighted the United States' commitment and support for the democratic transition in the country and the success of the transitional period, noting President Joe Biden's personal interest in what is happening in Sudan and his commitment to ensuring the success of the transitional period towards the desired democracy.
