Arrest of French Olympic Champion for Allegedly Raping a Minor

Former Olympic champion Yannick Agnel was arrested by French police yesterday as part of an investigation into allegations of "rape and sexual assault on a 15-year-old minor," according to the public prosecutor's office in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin), as reported by the AFP agency. Edwige Roumeryso disclosed that the 29-year-old, the famous swimmer and gold medalist in the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m relay at the 2012 London Olympics, in addition to being a world champion in these events in 2013, was arrested "in Paris and taken into custody in Mulhouse" based on a judicial mandate. The prosecutor stated that a complaint was filed against Agnel last summer for incidents dating back "to around 2016."

Agnel obtained a license at the "Mulhouse Olympic" swimming club in September 2014, before leaving in the summer of 2016 after the Rio Olympics. Since retiring from swimming in 2016, Agnel transitioned to e-sports and regularly appears in various media; he was a prominent adviser for the "France Télévisions" network during the recent Tokyo Olympics.
