Omicron Arrives from Africa to Lebanon

The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced on Saturday that two individuals coming from Africa tested positive for the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. The ministry stated that "the cases are in home isolation and show mild symptoms," considering that "the arrival of the Omicron variant in Lebanon was a matter of time after its spread in most countries around the world."

The ministry emphasized that "this should serve as an incentive for everyone (...) not to become complacent with preventive measures and to actively and without hesitation get vaccinated with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, in order to achieve 'community safety.'"

Lebanese Health Minister, Firas Abiad, confirmed on Thursday that there were suspicions of two individuals infected with the Omicron variant entering Lebanon. Abiad noted in a press conference that the patients "are in good health," pointing out that their symptoms are mild, and that they have been adhering to quarantine since their arrival in Lebanon.

Earlier, Raef Reda, head of the Lebanese Social Medical Gathering, expressed concerns that the Omicron variant "may have infiltrated Lebanon through Beirut Airport." He indicated that "around 45 countries around the world have reported cases of Omicron, which is rapidly spreading and contagious, affecting even vaccinated individuals who have received both doses, as well as children."
