Under the title "Egyptian Terrorist Killed in the Philippines... 'Suicide Bomber' Following in His Mother's Footsteps," the Emirati news site Al Ain reported on the death of a suspected Egyptian and armed militants in a gunfight with Philippine army troops in the southern part of the country. Soldiers were conducting a security operation in the village of Igasan in the town of Patikul on Jolo Island, about a thousand kilometers south of Manila, when they engaged a group of militants on Friday night. The soldiers recovered the bodies of the suspected Egyptian and two members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group after the fighting, according to Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr., the regional military commander. The Egyptian, known by the alias Yousuf, was one of five foreign terrorists believed to be active in Jolo, according to the military. Vinluan stated that the terrorist is the son of an Egyptian suicide bomber who was killed in an attack on a military unit in the nearby town of Indanan in September 2019. Yousuf volunteered to be a suicide bomber, while one of the dead members of the Abu Sayyaf group was identified as bomb maker Abu Khattab Jundallah, said Mayor General William Gonzalez, commander of the counter-terrorism force. He added, "Without them, launching another attack is less likely." The Abu Sayyaf group is considered the most violent armed group in the Philippines and has been blamed for some of the worst terrorist attacks in the country, as well as high-profile kidnapping for ransom incidents. Extremists have kidnapped dozens of foreigners for ransom since 2000, killing some, including a German man in 2017. The group has allied with the ISIS terrorist organization, which has claimed responsibility for several bombings in the Philippines.
