The Competitions Committee of the Spanish Football Federation decided to suspend Argentine star Messi for two matches due to his direct red card for an off-the-ball attack on Asier Villalibre, an Athletic Bilbao player, in the Spanish Super Cup final.
Barcelona appealed to reduce the sanction to one match instead of two, arguing that the player had never received a red card with the team prior to this incident. Today, the Competitions Committee of the Spanish Federation acknowledged the appeal submitted by Barcelona regarding the penalty imposed on their Argentine star Lionel Messi. According to the Spanish newspaper "Mundo Deportivo," the Competitions Committee rejected Barcelona's appeal and upheld Messi's penalty. Notably, the Argentine star missed the match against Cornella yesterday, Thursday, in the Round of 32 of the Copa del Rey, in addition to the upcoming match against Elche on Sunday in Round 20 of La Liga.
