The police in Duhok province, northern Iraq, have reported the death of a mother and her four children from carbon monoxide poisoning due to coal used for heating in a village near Akre. Coal is a common and primary heating source for the poor during winter. The police stated that "the mother died with her four children in Akre due to suffocation from coal gas used for heating early in the morning." According to the statement reported by Al-Sumaria TV, "the incident occurred late Thursday night when the woman and her children were asleep in the village of Qubka in the Gardaseen area and died from coal gas." The police statement also noted that "the children's father was not home at the time of the incident, as he works as a member of the Peshmerga forces."
