Lavrov Contacts U.S. Counterpart, Shows Readiness for Dialogue

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made a phone call to his American counterpart, during which he expressed Moscow's readiness for constructive dialogue on several issues.

Sputnik reported that Lavrov and Blinken welcomed the extension of the "New START" treaty, which helps improve the international security situation. According to the agency, Lavrov and Blinken discussed arms reduction in light of Washington's withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the prospects of "open skies."

The two sides also addressed the promotion of peaceful resolutions in Syria and Libya.

Informed media and diplomatic circles believe that the new U.S. administration is determined to change the landscape of foreign policies, especially with its traditional adversaries, predominantly Russia. The White House confirmed that the U.S. and Russian presidents agreed to expedite the extension of the New START treaty, which was carried out on January 27.
