German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has banned the Islamist organization "Ansar International" along with several affiliated organizations. Steve Alter, a spokesperson for Seehofer, stated on Twitter today, Wednesday, that "the network funds terrorism worldwide through donations" it collects.
Alter quoted Seehofer saying: "If you want to combat terrorism, you must dry up its funding sources."
The ban was attributed to the organization's fundraising efforts aimed at diverting funds to terrorist groups abroad, particularly Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria, the Palestinian Hamas movement, and Al-Shabaab in Somalia.
It appears that donors have been misled into believing that their money is being directed solely for humanitarian purposes.
