The first woman in the world to receive a COVID-19 vaccine urged everyone to get their second dose. Maggie Keenan, who received her first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine last December and has now received both doses, spoke with NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens and healthcare workers via Zoom video chat. During the conversation, where Maggie reunited with the nurse who administered her vaccine, she expressed pride in being the first person globally to be protected against COVID-19.
Maggie, 91, said, "I ask everyone to go and get the vaccine because it's the best thing I've done. I hope everyone comes forward to get the vaccine." Stevens added that the health service is monitoring patient progress "at record numbers" for receiving the second doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. This comes after rare cases of blood clots were reported following people receiving the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine. The UK vaccine authority changed its recommendation for who should receive the AstraZeneca vaccine as a precaution, limiting it to those aged 30 and above, but added that there is not enough data to show that the clots are caused by the vaccine. Over 33 million people in the UK have received the first dose of the vaccine, while more than 10.7 million have received both doses.
