The Importance of Thyroid Tests for Diabetic Patients

The Federal Center for Health Education has stated that thyroid tests are important for diabetic patients, as the thyroid gland has a significant impact on metabolism, specifically on blood sugar levels in diabetics. The German center explained that hyperthyroidism leads to a slowdown in insulin secretion, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels, while hypothyroidism causes a slowdown in metabolism, reducing the need for insulin, thereby increasing the risk of low blood sugar when diabetics receive their usual insulin dosage.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include high blood pressure, heart rhythm disturbances, nervousness, sleep disorders, weight loss, diarrhea, excessive sweating, menstrual irregularities in women, hair loss, mood swings up to aggression, fatigue, and weakness.

On the other hand, symptoms of hypothyroidism include weakness and rapid fatigue, decreased mental performance, memory impairment, depression, facial swelling, dry and rough skin, sensitivity to cold, brittle hair, fragile nails, hoarseness, weight gain, constipation, low blood pressure, circulatory disturbances, and reduced sexual desire.

Diabetic patients should consult a doctor upon noticing these symptoms to diagnose and treat thyroid issues in a timely manner.
