Swedish police announced that a young man in his twenties attacked 8 people with a "sharp object," resulting in two serious injuries in the city of Vetlanda, Sweden.
According to a statement from the Swedish police reported by AFP this afternoon, the attacker was taken to the hospital after police shot him in the leg during his arrest attempt, following the incident that occurred in the southern Swedish city this afternoon. The police clarified in their statement that they initially treated the incident as "attempted murder," but later changed their assessment to suspect it as a "terrorist attack." The Swedish police noted that security forces are now investigating the attack as a potential "terrorist crime," pointing out that there were no fatalities in the assault. The police have decided to hold a press conference later this evening. Swedish intelligence agencies consider the terrorist threat to be high, as the Scandinavian country has been targeted twice in attacks in recent years. In December 2010, a man carried out a suicide bombing in central Stockholm, resulting in his death and minor injuries to passersby. In April 2017, a rejected Uzbek asylum seeker attacked pedestrians in Stockholm with a stolen truck, killing 5 people. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 2018.
