After the United States imposed new tariffs on approximately $2 billion worth of aluminum imported from 18 countries last October.
Donald Trump, the outgoing U.S. president, announced the exemption for the UAE from the 10% tariffs imposed on most aluminum imports in 2018. Trump added that the two countries reached a quota agreement that will limit aluminum imports. According to a statement issued by the White House on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, before President-elect Joe Biden took office, the agreement was made in light of the important security relations between the two countries. This exemption allows the UAE to join Argentina, Australia, Canada, and Mexico in being exempted from aluminum tariffs.
