A two-year-old Yemeni girl, named Dunia Idris Hamoud, suffered a brutal attack from a lion inside a zoo in Ibb province, central Yemen, resulting in the amputation of her left hand. According to local sources, the girl inserted her hand through an opening in the protective mesh of the lion's enclosure, which led to the lion biting her hand while her father was preoccupied taking a souvenir photo of her.
The sources further reported, as conveyed by local media, that the little girl was immediately given first aid and taken to the hospital, along with her father, who fainted due to the shock of what happened to his daughter while he was distracted capturing a picture of her next to the lion.
Human rights activists have held both the father and the zoo management (which is under the control of Houthi militia) accountable, citing their negligence in adequately protecting visitors by failing to provide appropriate protective mesh for such wild animals or maintaining a safe distance to prevent visitors and children from getting too close to the animals.
